Metal BracesAny brand of braces with a metal base is referred to as metal braces. All metal braces are combined systems made from various types of metals that form a harmonized composition. The combination of different materials is intended to enhance the system with new properties and improve its therapeutic effectiveness. The main purpose of these metals is to prevent oxidation while maintaining their color. Braces of the latest generations have features that distinguish them and form the basis of modern orthodontic directions. The price of each group is a defining factor.

The use of metal combinations has found application not only in orthodontics but also in other fields unrelated to bite correction. Metal braces were the original invention in orthodontics — affordable systems that laid the foundation for all other types of orthodontic appliances, including metal-free systems like ceramic and sapphire braces. Every metal system includes archwires, which are also made of metal. These wires can bend, retain the shape programmed by the orthodontist, and be removed quickly when necessary.

Metal braces are usually placed using the vestibular method:

  •     The orthodontist checks all components to ensure everything is included in the kit.
  •     The system along with the archwires is attached to the front (vestibular) surface of the patient's teeth, ensuring all brackets are properly locked with the wire.
  •     A quick check with the patient after installation helps determine if there is any sensitivity to the metal system.

There are two types of metal brace systems: vestibular and lingual. Metal braces are a reliable solution for correcting bite issues and achieving a beautiful smile. Modern metal bases do not harm tooth enamel, do not cause cavities, and do not lead to other complications. Installing metal braces is straightforward; what matters most is ongoing observation and evaluation of their effect on the teeth. Under the supervision of a skilled orthodontist, metal braces can be worn with confidence. The cost of the latest models allows for their use even in complex treatment plans.

Duration of treatment with braces:

  •     Short (unscheduled period) — when treatment ends earlier than planned by the orthodontist.
  •     Short planned period — the expected timeframe in which the doctor can complete bite correction.
  •     Average duration — typical treatment length.
  •     Extended treatment — prolonging the treatment period due to medical necessity with an official assessment by the doctor.

Research on malocclusion continues, but it is safe to say that metal braces remain a leading tool in orthodontic treatment, and their relevance will last for many years to come! The approximate time it takes for metal braces to start correcting the bite is about four months, with some cases showing noticeable improvement in just three months. This is only the initial phase and doesn't reflect the total treatment duration.
